Alcibiades, a Greek statesman and military commander, was born in Athens, in the time from the Peace of Nicias to the end of the Peloponnesian War he greatly influenced the events in the Greek world. He left a mark on his time both with personal scandals and dis-plays of power, and with grand military efforts on which he embarked.
For easier understanding of the social climate at the time Alcibiades entered politics, the undergraduate thesis first presents the relations between Persia and Greece, the development of the contrast between Athens and Sparta, and the course of the Peloponnesian War up to the Peace of Nicias. Then in chronological order Alcibiades and the events and circumstanc-es in his life that shaped him the most will be presented: his beauty and status, his relation-ship with Socrates, his entrance in politics, the Olympic games, the Sicilian Expedition and his recall, switching sides during the war, his return to Athens, and his death in exile.
