The thesis examines the formation and development of low-cost airlines around the world, with a focus on the European area. Low-cost airlines are an important player in the passenger air transport market, as their fares are lower than with traditional airlines and have therefore made air travel possible to a larger part of the public.
The first part of this thesis presents the development and history of low-cost airlines in various regions of the world and the regulatory constraints that have limited their formation. This part also presents statistics of the currently operating low-cost airlines, according to the regions of the world they operate in. The following part presents the differences in the operations of traditional and low-cost airlines, including the organization of the operations themselves, the specifics of the operations and a comparison of the financial and statistical data. This part also presents two aircraft families that are typical of low-cost airlines. The final part of the thesis discusses the future of low-cost airlines and the possible directions in which such airlines could evolve.
