In my thesis, I studied the integration of immigrant children in Slovenian kindergartens. The work consists of theoretical and empirical work.
In my theoretical work, I first defined interculturalism and the division of immigrants. In the following, I have defined the intercultural environment and listed the factors that are important for it. After that, I focused on the programme of work with immigrant children, the model of intercultural education and the demonstration of the process of integrating immigrant children into the group. In each case, I have described each area, models and steps in more detail. I also paid attention to the official legal-formal bases, which I divided into Slovenian and international legal-formal bases. Finally, I have identified intercultural competencies, which are very imporatnt in this process.
The aim of the thesis was to find out how to properly prepare for the admission of an immigrant child to kindergarten and what approach professional staff in kindergarten have when integrating an immigrant child into kindergartens. In the empirical work, I found this with the help of a questionnaire consisting of open and closed questionnaires and the Likart scale of views. The sample consisted of 35 educator and educator´s assistants who answered the questionnaire anonymously. I presented the results in a descriptive and table.
The results of the survey showed that most professionals had at least one case of having an immigrant child in the group. The results suggest that the job of a professional has almost no impact on the perception of the importance of the correct approach to integrating the immigrant child into the group. Through my research, I found that most professionals choose the same approaches and ways of working with immigrant children as well as with parents of immigrant children and also for other children who are alredy in the group.
