In the first part of the paper, the genetic and the sociolinguistic approaches towards the divission of linguistic reality are presented. Firstly, language as a genetic-linguistic phenomenon and standard language as a sociolinguistic phenomenon are more precisely defined. Secondly, in the relation to both, regional or local standard langugae is described. The second part is dedicated to the contemporary regional standard languages on the margins of the Slovene linguistic territory (in the Resia/Rezija valley, the Torre/Ter and Natisone/Nadiža valleys in Italy and in the Rabavide/Porabje region in the Hungary). It deals with the circumstances of their appearance and the ways they are formed, as well as with their social role in the local linguistic community and their relation to standard Slovene.
