Abstract

Title:The interdependency of liturgical music and architectural sacred space in Christianity
Abstract:
The main goal of the work is to identify the main interdependency of liturgical music and architectural sacred space in christianity and the importance of archaeoacoustics in this process. There are acoustical characteristics that are present in catholic churches through different time periods. Architectural features relate or interact with the acoustical behavior of the space which led to a specific path in the history of church music and architectural design. Music forms such as Gregorian chant, poliphony, policorality, cori spezzati evolved and found its way in sacred space. Architectural design of romanesque, gothic, baroque churches support different styles in a different way and are often accompanied by acoustic resonant vases. Sacred liturgy connects sacred music and architecture. Therefore different events in the history of liturgy had an important impact on both. From the very beginning of Christianity the church was a place for the gathering of the faithful, to witness a ritual, and also to hear the word of God. Accompanying music was attuned to the sacred space. The second part of the study includes archeo-acoustic analysis of the Gothic Church Charterhouse in Pleterje to show how acoustic simulations could be used to find the impulse response of other churches. Chartusian order is of a particular acoustic interest because the architectural structures seem to be designed for longer reverberation times in order to reinforce Gregorian chants. Charterhouse in Pleterje is the only one in Slovenia that remains a Carthusian monastery to this day and includes the Gothic church which survives from the Gothic period.
