This article presents three examples of categorisation of historical terms: pripovest (tale), basen (fable) and historija (story). The content of the contribution is necessarily arranged chronologically and in each of the cited genres it is further sub-categorised. It is evident here how demanding generic categorisation is: the uncertainty and temporariness of expressions within this process, possible synonyms for the second term, and in the third instance so many changes of meaning that its name has been transferred to another genre within a completely different generic group.
