In the past decade, public sector organizations in Slovenia have begun to publish data on their operations, providing citizens with an overview of their activities and increasing transparency. However, this data is rarely in a format that allows for immediate use, as it needs to be imported into a database, assigned identifiers, and checked for errors if necessary.
Open data from public sectors can be found on open data portals. In Slovenia, the Open Data Slovenia (OPSI) portal is used for this purpose. From this portal, we obtained open data on election results and spatial units, which we later used in the development of a web application for displaying open data on election results in Slovenia.
The aim of the thesis was to develop an application that allows users to view and display detailed election results online in one place. This was achieved first by reviewing the topic and key concepts such as open data, elections, and geographic information systems, and then by analysis of legislation in the fields of open data from the public sector, as well as election legislation in Slovenia. The second half of the thesis focuses on the development of a web application for displaying election results. Using various technologies, we created a web application that will display results of past parliamentary and presidential elections in Slovenia, including results for electorates and electoral districts.
