Abstract

Title:The Challenges in Communication between Educational Workers and Immigrant Children and Parents
Abstract:
Immigrant children are increasingly entering the Slovenian education system and communication with them is becoming more challenging. Several legislative changes were made in the past few years but they are slow to enter schools. In the theoretical part the thesis summarizes Slovenia's immigration policy with an emphasis on integration of immigrant children into schools and gives an overview of key projects and guidelines on immigrant children integration. The thesis aims to find how primary school teachers tackle problems in communication with immigrant children and parents, which methods of communication they use and what are the consequences of unsuccessful communication. The thesis also studies the importance of host country language learning in communication and presents the Slovenian as a foreign language course. 13 interviews with primary school teachers were conducted for the purpose of the research, as well as one interview with a volunteer community interpreter and one interview with an intercultural mediator.

Keywords:communication, integration, primary school, intercultural mediation, Slovenian as a foreign language
