The article discusses issues facing the editor of teaching materials. The process of producing textbooks and teachers' manuals is a constant interaction of various factors and complex processes (new educational paradigms and changes in the curriculum, focused on quality knowledge and learning; lifelong education; advances in information technology; market demands etc.) as well as knowing the various media available, from books to multimedia and the Internet. Professionalism is another key factor that contributes to quality knowledge transfer to textbooks, calling for a high level of expertise, as well as constant interaction and knowledge exchange with university experts and teachers. The article focuses on the editor's work in the field of Slovene language and literature, and on short term as well as long term programme planning in accordance with modern principles of teaching literature in secondary school. An outline is given of methodological principles for the high school readers Branja 1-4, the literary series Klasje and other teaching material on literature.
