Abstract

Abstract:
Overviews of folk-song heritage consider Primož Trubar's transcription of the beginning of a Christmas carol in his Katekizem z dvema izlagama (Catechism with Two Commentaries) to be the first transcription of a Slovenian folk song. However, this transcription is valuable not only because of this landmarkevent: the context in which this song is placed is as important as thetranscription itself. The context reflects a judgment of society that Trubar presented in his catechism from various viewpoints and with a great deal of criticism, and it clarifies which social class Trubar regarded as being most representative of the Slovenian nation. Trubar was well acquaintedwith both the administrative and social centers of power, which he also demonstrated through his note on caroling, which was also practiced in towns. He did not even mention the ritual processions that were still preserved in the countryside but had lost their social importance. Trubar thus focused on a socially more conspicuous form that was also known in Ljubljana. This confirms the fact that Trubar sought the identity of his fellow countrymen among both peasants and townsfolk. His mention of caroling is interesting not only because of the song, but also because it defines the social horizon of Trubar's perception of "Slovenian identity." This not only outlines Trubar's perception of folk song, but also problematizes the horizons of the discipline he dedicated himself to.
