V diplomski nalogi obravnavamo pomembno in vsakdanjo temo o računalniških omrežjih in prometu, ki poteka po njih. Naša glavna osredotočenost je bila predvsem na gene- riranju prometa s pomočjo generatorjev omrežnega prometa. V prvem delu diplomske naloge smo pod drobnogled vzeli štiri generatorje prometa, in sicer Packet Sender, Osti- nato, nping in TRex. Vsakega od njih smo preizkusili in določili funkcije, ki jih podpirajo. Generatorje omrežnega prometa smo nato glede na podprte funkcije primerjali med sabo in rezultate predstavili s tabelo. Posebej smo primerjali še protokole, ki jih ponujajo. V drugem delu smo opisali testno okolje, v katerem smo izvajali preiskuševanje gene- ratorjev. Podrobno smo predstavili postopek postavitve celotnega testnega okolja in nalaganja potrebne programske opreme. Na koncu smo analizirali še vzorčno pot, ki so jo poslani paketi prepotovali. V tretjem delu smo izvedli tri sklope testov, s katerimi smo preiskusili delovanje izbranega generatorja ter analizirali kakovost povezave med dvema oddaljenima napravama. V prvem sklopu testov smo izvedli tri enourne teste ob različnih urah. S tem smo preverjali, ali se kakovost povezave spreminja glede na uro pošiljanja. Naše ugotovitve smo nato primerjali z rezultati testa v drugem sklopu, kjer smo izvedli celodnevni test. V tretjem sklopu smo iskali največjo frekvenco pošiljanja, pri kateri je strežnik še lahko prejemal pakete in pošiljal odgovore nanje.

Naslov:Comparison of network traffic generators and testing the distortion of inter-arrival time distribution

This thesis deals with the important and everyday topic of computer networks and the traffic that flows over them. Our main focus has been on traffic generation using network traffic generators. In the first part of the thesis, we looked at four traffic generators, namely Packet Sender, Ostinato, nping and TRex. We tested each one of them and identified the functions they support. The network traffic generators were then compared against each other according to the supported functions and the results were presented in a table. We also compared the protocols they offer. In the second part, we described the test environment in which we carried out the testing of the generators. We described in detail the process of setting up the complete test environment and loading the necessary software. Finally, we analyzed the sample path traveled by the sent packets. In the third part, we performed three sets of tests to test the performance of the selected generator and to analyze the quality of the connection between the two remote devices. In the first set of tests, we ran three one-hour tests at different times. This was done to check whether the quality of the connection varies depending on the time of transmission. Our findings were then compared with the results of the second set of tests, where we ran a full-day test. In the third set, we looked for the maximum sending frequency at which the server was still able to receive packets and send replies to them.
