Abstract

Title:Social integration of migrant children into the local environment: the example of the Day Center »Žarek« : magistrsko delo
Abstract:
The integration of migrants into a new society is a complex process that demands coordinated migration and integration policies at the local, national, and international levels. The concept of integration remains open and somewhat contentious in numerous contexts due to its wide spectrum of dynamic processes, which can involve individuals, social groups, or even entire societies. Social integration of migrants, especially children, constitutes a multifaceted process encompassing various aspects of their lives. Success in this endeavor relies heavily on mutual learning and respect between immigrants and the majority population, with language proficiency playing a pivotal role, as the absence of language skills often leads to adverse experiences and feelings of non-acceptance. In Slovenia, migrant children, particularly those from the Balkan region, frequently become targets of verbal, physical, and psychological violence, significantly affecting their social and emotional well-being as well as the process of social integration. This master's thesis centers on the role of the "Žarek Day Center" in the social integration of migrant children into the local environment. This center is more than just an educational institution; it strives to create an inclusive environment where migrant children feel welcomed and respected. Through collaborative efforts with migrants, they lay the foundation for their social integration, aiming for smoother pathways and equal opportunities for success. The research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the role and significance of day centers like "Žarek" in the integration of migrants into the local community, potentially informing the development of appropriate policies and programs for the successful inclusion of migrants into their new society.
