As part of my thesis, my task was to synthesise a coordination compound [Zn(dipic)]. I used different reactants and two different solvents, water and methanol. I made 8 syntheses in which I doubled the masses that were written in the basic recipe. The main reactant in each synthesis was dipicolinic acid. I used zinc chloride and zinc acetate as sources of zinc. I used sodium hydroxide and 4-dimethylaminopyridine as bases. All the products obtained, which crystallised in the vial and those obtained by filtration, were dried or allowed to evaporate and prepared for further analysis. This was followed by X-ray powder analysis, which was carried out at the Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana. I also did IR spectroscopy at university. Based on the results of the X-ray powder analysis, I found that I had managed to synthesise a compound whose peaks closely matched the peaks in the diffractogram for [Zn(dipic)].
