The Institutional theory of art is one of the most important perspectives on contemporary art production, which developed in the second half of the 20th century. The roots of the theory can be traced back to the writings of the American philosophers Arthur Danto, whose redefinition of the artworld laid the foundations for the later development of the theory and the subsequent understanding of contemporary art. His example was followed by George Dickie, who was the first to formally establish and present the Institutional theory of art to a wider public. His analysis of the institution of the artworld unveils the complexity of validating and establishing contemporary art pieces in the 20th-century art field. Understanding this analysis remains crucial even in today’s art phenomenon. The Bachelor thesis analyses the development of the theory as well as its reception in Slovenia.
