We are constantly witnessing growing communication needs, which is why we are seeking solutions that will enable the best signal quality while reducing bandwidth and energy consumption. In this regard, we focus on using simple and efficient hardware. Therefore, the trend in satellite communication networks is shifting away from geostationary satellites towards the use of satellites in lower Earth orbits. This approach allows for better signal quality with reduced transmission power, decreased latency, and lower error probability.
The goal of this master's thesis is to analyse satellite technologies, with a special emphasis on the satellite broadband communication network called Starlink, developed by the American company SpaceX. The main purpose of the thesis is to provide a detailed presentation and description of the technical characteristics and the operation of both the ground and space segments of the network. The final part focuses on practical testing of the network's performance under various conditions and user experience in Slovenia.
