The diploma thesis presents the restoration of the Stržen riverbed in the area called Ključi. The purpose of the restoration and reactivation of the old meanders is to increase the living space for the animals and plants found in the Cerknica polje. In this area, a quiet zone will be formed for the Eurasian bittern, which has the only nesting area in Slovenia, precisely in Cerknica polje. Likewise, the reactivation of meanders will also have a positive effect on other species of birds that nest in this area and are listed on the Red List of endangered species in Slovenia. In the past, there were many interventions on the Cerknica polje, more precisely the straightening of the riverbed, with the aim of acquiring as much agricultural land as possible, which had a very negative impact on the environment. Above all, faster water flow, which caused the creation of new sinkholes in the riverbed, greater erosion, reduced self-cleaning ability, overheating of the water etc. The work presents the expected positive effects on the environment and the effects on certain animal species, which will be enabled to increase their population.
