Introduction: Ageing of the population represents one of the most characteristic phenomena of the modern society. The majority of the older adults would prefer to stay and age in their domestic environment to which they are emotionally attached. Meaningful leisure time has beneficial effect on health, both mentally and physically, and on active and healthy ageing of the older adults. Purpose: The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore the importance of leisure time for the older adults living in their domestic environment and to explore how the older adults spend their leisure time. Methods: This thesis incorporates a qualitative research method for which semi-structured interviews were conducted with five older adults living in their domestic environment in the Podravje Region. Data was analysed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: Based on the qualitative content analysis, five categories were identified: importance of leisure time for the older adults, experiencing and spending of leisure time, difference in how leisure time was spent before and after retirement, obstacles and incentives for the older adults to carry out leisure activities and spend leisure time during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was determined that involvement in leisure activities gives satisfaction to older adults, makes them feel better, and that it has beneficial effects. During leisure time, the older adults engage in cognitive, physical, recreational and social activities. After retirement they started performing new leisure activities and/or resumed old ones, which they were forced to quit before retirement due to the amount of work. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant effect on how leisure time was spent. It limited the place and the performance of leisure activities, which is why older adults carried out more leisure activities individually and in their domestic environment. Discussion and conclusion: Performance of the selected leisure activities have positive effects on the well-being and health of the older adults. They can decrease cognitive decline, improve psychophysical condition and, consequently, improve well-being and increase the quality of their lives. The occupational therapist suggests an appropriate leisure activity to the older adults, adjusts it if necessary, or adjusts its performance or place of its performance in order to allow the older adults to engage in leisure activities despite the potential obstacles or disabilities.
