The main objective of the diploma thesis is to clarify the pronunciation of the letter <l> according to the current orthoepic norm, so in the current orthoepic manual (in Slovenski pravopis 2001), not directly in use. In doing so, the problem turns out to be very wide and complex because of the di-vision between pronunciation and transcription. The problem of transcription of the letter <l> in-volves different ways of writing it in the past. I begin my thesis with an insight into the chapter in Slovenski pravopis 2001. The presentation of the problem is continued with historical reviews, which shows that the origin of the problem was at the very beginning of the Slovenian standard language in the 16th century and has been one of the central problems in almost all Slovenian lan-guage manuals to date. Since the mid- 19th century, due to the increasing role of the use of Slove-nian in public life, there has been a need to standardise spoken and not only written language. The problem of pronunciation of the letter <l> and the spelling of some places where <l> is written today becomes the central problem of standardisation of Slovenian standard speech, which causes excitement among the public. In modern standard Slovenian is still mainly the question of how to present the complex rule of pronunciation most systematically, which is evolving with each new recodification manual. Based on the analysis of chapters in recodification orthoepic manuals from 1899 onwards, I gave a critical view of chapter in Slovenski pravopis 2001. A brief hearing analy-sis of a few hours of radio and television programmes also helped to provide information on the use of some problematic cases, which may not yet have a very clearly defined section within the interpretation in the current orthoepic manual.
