Chemical batteries have long been a well-known concept that can be used to store energy which can then be used to power devices when the energy from electrical network is not available. However, with the shortage of raw materials, competition and new discoveries, research teams are trying to find alternative storage systems to already existing products. Accordingly, new generations of batteries are also gaining ground. This thesis will explain the structure and operation of metal-air batteries, which are a newly established technology that is expected to penetrate markets in the near future. Further, we will compare the materials for the components and specify the different types of these battery family. Finally, we will review some general applications and battery performance.
