In my thesis, I collected information on two types of hazardous substances, namely self-heating hazardous substances, and self-reactive hazardous substances. The work is mainly based on a detailed review of the legal provisions in the field of hazardous substances, their classification and handling.
Based on a thorough review of the legislation, I have searched for analytical methods that can be used to identify a substance as either self-heating or self-reactive, and I have critically characterised each method. Based on the methods, I have identified which properties of a substance with the ability to self-heat or self-react are important in defining safe handling. I have then identified technical and organisational measures to ensure health and safety when working with hazardous substances.
The content of the thesis will help to improve safety not only in the use of hazardous substances, but more specifically of hazardous substances that are self-heating or self-reactive
