Animation has experienced a surge in popularity in the recent years. Modern tools utilizing traditional techniques have allowed us to easily create animations in a variety of fields. The COVID-19 pandemic encouraged musical artists to use animation for their music videos instead of traditional filmmaking, which had to be shut down. Among them was also Slovene band Angel's Ex and their song Pod luno, which is the basis for this thesis.
Initially, we set out to explore different animation techniques and their history as well as putting an emphasis on animation in music videos specifically. In the second half of the thesis, we look at the process of creating an animation in the 2D computer-generated technique through an example, with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects as our main tools. The process is presented step-by-step, starting with the pre-production phase, when the concept, content, storyboard and visual identity are defined, and continuing with the production phase, when the individual elements come to life in the illusion of movement. The result is a video, created with modern tools, but still resembling the traditional techniques that inspired it.
