The rivers Pesnica and Šcavnica are bodies of water in northeastern Slovenia. Their basins together comprise a good 4 % of the surface of Slovenia. Together they build a good part of Slovenske gorice. In my thesis, I studied their similarities and differences. The work contains a detailed physical-geographical and human-geographical outline of the basins and a presentation of the hydrological characteristics of the river basins. The Environmental Agency of the Republic of Slovenia has been monitoring water quality of the studied watercourses for a long time. I analyzed physical and chemical parameters and presented them. The results are better than I initially expected, given the dense construction and the dominance of intensive agriculture in the Pesnica and Šcavnica valleys. For the most part, Pesnica and Šcavnica are characterized by a good chemical condition, only in Pristava (Šcavnica) the chemical condition was poor. The ecological condition of both watercourses is classified into several quality classes.
