This paper analyses thematic reference to the Baroque era in Andrej Hieng's tragicomedy Osvajalec (The Conqueror) which holds up a mirror to the period of its creation by using the historical context of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Hieng evokes the Baroque spirit through a series of Baroque conventions, ranging from themes of transience, inconstancy, vanity, illusion, and Baroque topics such as "life is a dream" and "the world as a stage", to the depiction of some characteristic Baroque contrasts that reveal the tensions and contradictions of a world in crisis.
