The paper deals with a number of themes. It begins with an analysis of concepts from the title, with an emphasis on (language) function and the relation between language in society and the language of (a) society. There follows a discussion of the function of the literary language, with an emphasis on the mobilisation of the humanist ideology of the 16th century. Theissue of the current relation between the concepts of the literary and the standard language is then presented. In connection with the selection of a methodology for a new basic dictionary of Slovene the question of quality arises.
