Auxetic structures represent a type of modern materials that have enormous potential for use in a wide range of fields. An overview and analysis of the structures are necessary for a proper understanding of functioning. With the help of the most recent literature, we have presented the classification of the structures into different groups, their characteristics, their potential uses and the technologies for their production. Furthermore, we have shown how the structures could be ballistically tested and subsequently analysed by tomography. The key steps and standards for successful testing are outlined. The results of the evaluation of auxetic materials based on tomography of different types of testing and possibilities of incorporating a high speed camera in the visible and infrared spectrum are presented
