The article explores the dimension of the representation of the Triestine reality, and analyses the different possibilities of its verbalisation. Three contemporary Triestine urban novels are examined - Nož in jabolko (The Knife and the Apple) by Ivanka Hergold, Ki od daleč prihajaš v mojo bližino (You Who Are Approaching me from the Distance) by Marko Sosič and Brez zime (Without Winter) by Vilma Purič. The structure of the novels reflects individual elements and different possibilities of creating fictional reality. The novels are characterised by a breakaway from the spiritual and stylistic influence of the two most representative Triestine authors, Boris Pahor and Alojz Rebula.
