One of the objectives of literary education is the development of national awareness. Several issues will be examined in the article. First, we shall consider to what extent the structure of literary education (objectives, content, and methods) and its appeal meet this objective in the sensitive area of Slovene-Italian cultural contact. Furthermore, we shall examine whether teachers of Slovene in secondary schools with Slovene as the language of instruction see literary education as an educational tool for the development of national identity, and how this is implemented. The article presents the findings of comparative empirical research conducted among teachers at Slovene secondary schools in Italy and Slovenia.
