The paper presents some results of research into key competencies in teaching literature. This has revealed that reading national literature does not significantly affect high-school students' respect for the national cultural heritage; moreover, it does not increase students' interest in reading Slovene national classics in their free time. The example of the poem Glosa by France Prešeren reveals some difficulties of understanding classic poetry; the paper is concluded with an example of the development of literary competencies by reading classic Slovene poetry.
