The main purpose of the thesis was to showcase the process of book design and create a more modern version of the short story Matkova Tina. Through a graphic redesign and illustrations of the short story, we wanted to revitalise it and bring it closer to the target audience, high school students.
The theoretical part is based on the book and its design. We focused on the importance and future of the book and defined the short story as a literary genre. We presented the characteristics of physical books, and then delved into the principles of design, which we broke down into several chapters. We described the features of books, from format, grid, typography, illustrations, and other graphic elements to binding.
In the experimental part, we first looked into the story of the short story Matkova Tina. After a short summary, we analysed the chronotope, the structure and the ideas and literary movements that we recognise in the book. We then analysed the existing editions of Matkova Tina and presented the characteristics of each edition. We focused on the format, the grid, the typography and the layout of the graphic elements. In addition, we studied the graphic design elements of comparable books with illustrations. We introduced our target audience and, based on the analysis, set to work on the design of the book. By testing and comparing different formats, grids, fonts, illustrations and graphic elements, we finally presented the best design solution. The final product is an illustrated book called Matkova Tina.
