The aim of the master's thesis was to provide an overview of various methods and aspects of library
space and equipment evaluation, and to apply some of them in a case study of the Ajdovščina
Central Library (hereafter referred to as ACL). We used several research methods for data
collection. First, we conducted three interviews with professional staff members of the Lavrič
Library Ajdovščina (hereafter referred to as LLA) in order to gain a deeper understanding of the
spatial situation of the ACL and the employee's perspective. Second, we conducted and expert
study in cooperation with the library director to evaluate ACL's spaces according to the guidelines
of the Library Act (ZKnj-1), the Rules on conditions for providing library services as a public service,
and the Professional Recommendations and Standards for General Libraries. Finally, we conducted
a survey to determine user satisfaction with ACL's spaces and equipment. Through conducting
research and analyzing previous research, we found that when evaluating library facilities, we can
evaluate aspects related to the library’s surface, spaces, and equipment; environmental and
climatic aspects;and aspects related to users with disabilities. They can be evaluated using several
methods, such as mental mapping, various observation techniques, experiments, survey methods,
and expert studies. Based on the individual aspects that we have evaluated with selected methods
using ACL as an example, we found that it needs additional and larger spacesin which the needs of
the library and its staffas well as those of all user groups must be adequately addressed.
