The European Environment Agency (EEA) collects air quality data for European Union countries, and makes this data publicly available through a
website. However, the data is presented in a complex and difficult to read
XML format. In this thesis, we present an application that improves upon
the existing solution provided by the EEA for accessing air quality data in
Europe. Our goal was to make it faster and more efficient to access this
data. Additionally, we analyzed the EEA’s current database schema and
proposed an improved schema. We developed two versions of our application, which primarily differ in their data collection source. Our application
provides simple visualizations of collected data, in addition to being faster
and more efficient. By using our application, researchers will have easier
access to a large amount of data, which will enable them to conduct more
extensive research.
