Mononuclear copper(II) complex with quinaldinate, [Cu(quin)2(H2O)], was reacted with two alcoholamines, diethanolamine (deaH2) and N-methyldiethanolamine (Me-deaH2). Reaction conditions were also varied. Dinuclear copper(II) complexes were obtained for both ligand systems, [Cu2(quin)2(deaH)2)] for diethanolamine and [Cu2(quin)3(Me-deaH)]·2MeOH for N-methyldiethanolamine. Anionic forms of alcoholamines were found coordinated to copper(II) ions. The anions form on the deprotonation of hydroxyl moiety. Influence of the reaction conditions over the nature of the product was also studied.
