One blue-green 1 and one purple copper(II) compound 2 along with and one pink cobalt(II) coordination compound 3 with phenoxyacetic acid ( = HL = C8H7O3) were synthesized and described. A neutral phenoxyacetic acid was added to the copper(II) and cobalt(II) starting compounds, which were dissolved in methanol or water. Additional pyridine neutral ligand nicotinamide was used as well. The isolated compounds were analysed with various methods thereafter, namely with: X-ray powder diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The powder difractograms of compounds 1 and 3 correspond to the calculated difractograms of compounds [Cu(L)(L)]6 and [Co(L)2(H2O)2]n, respectively, having structures already determined. No such match was found for the compound 2. According to the elemental analysis for 2, the formulae Cu(L)2(nia)2 (nia = nicotinamide = C6H6N2O) is proposed. A presence of the carboxylic vibrations in the 1600 and 1400 cm-1 range is found in IR spectra of all three compounds. The bands above 3000 cm-1 in the IR spectrum of compound 2 is attributed to the presence of nicotinamide. The colour of the isolated compounds is consistent with the absorption of red light for Cu(II) compounds and yellow to green light for Co(II) compound.
