This thesis provides an insight into the whole process of loading and offloading of livestock; the documentation that is needed by both the transport provider and livestock; the laws and regulations that need to be followed, by both the transport provider and the buyer of live-stock, during transport within the EU and in Slovenia, as well as in third countries; the treatment of animals when resting, feeding, cleaning, loading and offloading; and last but not least, how to allow for animal-friendly transportation as much as possible. Additionally, there is also an introduction to vehicles used to transport livestock by road, railway, air, and sea.
The main theme of the thesis, however, is transportation of livestock by sea, covering the following areas: the condition of vessels used in transportation, laws and documentation, journey length, the kind and number of livestock that can be transported by a single vessel, as well as problems and issues which may result in the death of boarded animals or cause various types of illnesses, diseases or suffering.
Slovenia has only one port, i.e., Luka Koper, and as such it naturally comes with its own livestock terminal, which is also described in greater detail in this thesis, including its ca-pacity, the process of loading livestock onto a ship, and an overview of the total amount of transported livestock in 2022.
