Virginity is one of the most interesting topics in sexuality, due to its complexity and difficulty in illustrating. It was created based on myths that have mostly been proven to be false, but are still strongly prevalent in society. Virginity as a strongly gendered social construct, which was higly valued in the past, is becoming less important today and is frequently treated as a step on an individual’s journey towards sexuality. The loss of virginity is an important event in an individual’s life, which is expected in their youth, as it is regarded as a stigma, both from the point of view of society and the individual, later in life. In my master's thesis, I investigate whether there is an age limit when virginity shifts from being acceptable to unacceptable and how this limit differs depending on gender. In the assignment I also focus on the respondents' view about virginity, possible social pressures and the occurance of double standards.
