Abstract
We were interested in the view of students and alumni on the study program, which is being implemented at the Department of Librarianship, Information Science and Book studies at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. The purpose of the research was to find out why a smaller number of students chooses Information Science. What are the motives for the choice, and the impact of employment opportunities on it and the opinion about the characteristics of the study program. The findings could contribute to a more comprehensive evaluation of the study program and an easier understanding of the main guidelines for selection. The research took place from June 27 to July 25, 2022. Two online questionnaires were used, the functionality of which was tested with a pilot study. There were 66 participants (56 students and 10 alumni). Our target group was all students enrolled in the department, regardless of course, direction or level of study, as well as alumni of the department who have recently completed their studies. The results showed that the students have at least a basic idea of what information science is, but they want more practice and examples of practical application of content in various areas inside and outside the library environment. Decisions about the choice of orientation were often tied to interest in the content, but we detected some deviations. Better employment opportunities are also an important factor. Based on the results of the research, we conclude that students most often choose a field that, in their opinion, is not the most demanding and is interesting, although not the most interesting, but at the same time provides the most defined employment opportunities.
