The thesis sheds light on France Marolt and his role in co-creating Slovenian national identity. That is determined by a critical analysis of historical sources and an interview. The first part provides a historical and cultural framework of the time period between the two world wars. The second part is dedicated to Marolt’s biography, which tries to capture his complex personality, showcasing both his numerous outstanding achievements as well as his angry outbursts, stubbornness and striving for excellence. With select Marolt’s works and concerts, the third and final part shows his contributions to the emergence of Slovenian national identity. His works are purposefully presented in chronological order, thus underscoring the development of national identity from highlighting special features to clearly articulated demands.
