Abstract
Uvod: Neprimerno vedenje s strani uporabnikov do zdravstvenih delavcev, še posebej delovnih terapevtov, je tema, o kateri v zdravstvu ni dovolj govora. Rezultati: Iz kvalitativne vsebinske analize smo oblikovali štiri kategorije: neprimerno vedenje v zdravstvu in delovni terapiji, izkušnje z neprimernim vedenjem, doživljanje neprimernega vedenja, podpora delovnega okolja in predlogi. Razprava in zaključek: V razpravi smo naše rezultate povezali z do sedaj znano literaturo na področju neprimernega vedenja do delovnih terapevtov.

Title:
Inappropriate client behavior towards occupational therapists in Slovenia : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: The issue of inappropriate client behavior towards healthcare workers especially occupational therapists is a topic that has not been researched enough. Inappropriate behavior is defined as actions that result in disrespect and degradation of dignity. These actions include physical, psychological, verbal and sexual violence. Inappropriate behavior is the most common in the field of mental health, cognitive impairments and people diagnosed with dementia. The most common form of inappropriate client behavior towards healthcare workers (occupational therapists) is inappropriate sexual behavior. Long term effects that inappropriate behavior has on healthcare workers can be acknowledged on psychological and physical health. Purpose: The study’s aim was to investigate what experiences occupational therapists in Slovenia have with inappropriate client behavior. Methods: In the thesis we used qualitative research approach. We interviewed six occupational therapists from Slovenia who have experienced inappropriate client behavior using semi- structured interviews. Results: In the qualitative analysis we developed 4 categories: inappropriate behavior in healthcare and occupational therapy, experiences with inappropriate client behavior, work environment support and further suggestions. We found that verbal violence was the most common form of client abuse towards occupational therapists working in the field of mental health disorders where they encountered verbal violence on a daily basis. The most common feelings occupational therapists displayed were helplessness, bad mood, negative feelings and feeling hurt. In the events of encountering inappropriate behavior, they reacted according to established protocol set by their institution. Discussion and conclusion: In discussion we connected the results from our study with existing literature in the field of inappropriate client behavior towards occupational therapists. Inappropriate client behavior occurs more frequently in some fields of occupational therapy than in others. It is necessary to realize that any form of inappropriate behavior, even if it is a result of illness is unacceptable and requires appropriate action. To address this matter in a more efficient way, it would be necessary to raise awareness and offer courses during undergraduate education or internship and organize trainings in the institutions. Due to the lack of literature and research, further, more in-depth research would be necessary.
