As the global population and industrialization increase, the need for energy increases as well. We can assume that geothermal energy will be one of the most perspective alternative sources, although it is currently in the second place when we talk about renewable sources. In the first part of the thesis, the emphasis was mainly on the generation of geothermal energy and the structure of the Earth' s interior, as well as a detailed description of the methodology of geothermal research, which also includes the thermal properties of fluids and hills, which are essential for determining the geothermal potential of a certain area and the possibility of exploiting it. In general, in Slovenia, geothermal energy is used indirectly (by using a heat pump), the exception is the area of NE Slovenia where the geothermal gradient is elevated, which indicates the perspective of this area and the possibility of using geothermal energy for other purpose such as district heating and possible electricity generation. In the second part of the thesis, the sustainable use of geothermal energy was presented, which is characterized by reinjection or returning water back to the aqifer, since inadequate exploitation of geothermal aquifer can be characterized as »mining«. Based on this research, we also made an informative calculation of the time of utilization of the water from the geothermal aquifer, without falling it under the influnece of the inflow of cold water.
