In this thesis I updated the graphical user interface of the Slovenian online message board »Slo-Tech” with the help of the principles of user-centred design. With the update of the graphical user interface, I applied the version of the UCD version which I presented in this thesis.
Firstly, I presented a version of the UCD model which includes six stages. The order of the stages is the following: hierarchical task analysis, the gathering of requirements, (digital) design prototyping, evaluation, and implementation.
After the first part, I then applied the UCD model to a practical example, in which I updated the graphical user interface of the afore mentioned online board using all main stages of the UCD model, with multiple iterations of task analysis, evaluation, and prototyping. The result is an updated online board, which can be interacted with on any computer, tablets, smartphones, or even other electronic devices like the Xbox One, which have a modern web browser installed.
With the help of some users, I then evaluated the updated message board objectively, so that I measured the number of steps and the time taken by the user to complete a specific task. The updated user interface proved to be better, because on average it took the users less time to perform every task. Afterwards, I also performed a subjective evaluation with the help of the NASA Task Load Index. The overall Index over the updated online board is lower the Index of the old version, although based of the individual factors, the differences are not necessary statistically significant by each of the four tasks the user had to perform. The results of the User Experience Questionnaire have shown that all elements of the updated online board are better that the old one. The user interface proved to be more attractive, more manageable, and more effective. The updated online board stimulates the user to use it and is also more steerable and more original compared to Its old counterpart.
