Storage and transport of hydrogen, a promising carrier of renewable energy sources, represents a rapidly developing field of green sustainable development. In this work, GERG 2008 equation of state for pure substances and mixtures were used to describe the thermodynamic properties of hydrogen and mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas. As part of the analysis of the pressure drop in the flow of pure hydrogen and in the flow of a mixture of natural gas and different mole fractions of hydrogen, we considered the influence of the temperature and the pressure of the gas mixture, as well as the diameter and the length of the pipeline. In the flow of a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen, the pressure drop and the velocity of the mixture in the pipeline strongly depend on the mole fraction of hydrogen in the mixture. Based on a review of the literature, we compiled guidelines for the required purity of hydrogen for hydrogen pipelines and for injecting hydrogen into gas pipeline networks.
