The aim of the diploma thesis was to design, from an idea to the final product, packaging for potica that would be as ecological, aesthetically pleasing and functional as possible. The final product is packaging for potica, suitable for corporate or personal gifting. In the theoretical part, we described packaging in general, detailing more packaging made from paper, paperboard and cardboard as well as their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. We also presented requirements food packaging must comply with. Ecological packaging and design was studied and described, as was packaging for corporate gifting. We also studied what types of packaging for potica are available in the market and described their characteristics.
The experimental part includes material testing as well as packaging design and its manufacturing. The MetsäBoard Prime FBB Bright paperboard with grammage of 330 g/m2, which complies with food packaging requirements, was selected. The basic, mechanical and optical characteristics of the material were determined. During planning of packaging our idea for the shape and design of the packaging was improved by drawing a base. Thus, packaging with an additional function was designed. When it stops serving its primary purpose of protecting a product, we can turn it into a birdhouse. In this way, service life of the packaging was prolonged and its impact on the environment reduced. The packaging was printed, cut and put together, representing our final product.
