Artemisinin is a medicinal, antimalarial substance, naturally derived from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua). Since 1972, artemisinin has been used as an antimalarian drug. Its proven versatility in recent years has led to its increased use in the pharmaceutical and food industry. Due to its poor solubility in many solvents, micellar formulation is commonly used as a drug delivery system. To achieve product safety and efficiency, products need to be properly analysed.
In this Bachelor's thesis I worked on the development of a method for the determination of artemisinin in micellar formulations, which, to my knowledge, has never been published before. Initially, I developed a method for the determination of artemisinin by HPLC-UV/VIS. Then I tested the effect of temperature and the presence of an antioxidant on the analyte and developed a method for the determination of artemisinin in micellar formulations.
