In this work we successfully synthesized, isolated and characterized six new biphenyl compounds based on the [18F]FDDNP analogue, containing a push-pull system. Their diverse optical spectra, quantum yields, and molar absorptivity demonstrate the extraordinary influence of electron-withdrawing groups on the optical properties of molecular probes. Synthesized probes exhibit a favorable bathochromic shift of the absorption and emission maxima, allowing for less autofluorescence in the detection of protein aggregates connected to Alzheimer’s disease using the fluorescence microscopy analysis. Furthermore, their large Stokes shifts increases the signal-to-noise ratio during the detection. The favorable optical properties of the synthesized molecules, together with their rod-like shape, suggest their potentially successful use in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
