Lignin is a macromolecule composed of phenylpropyl units cross-linked by ether bonds, with beta-O-4 bonds predominating. Lignin molecule is very complex, so model compounds are usually used to study its reactivity and structure. In my diploma thesis I will focus on the synthesis of a model containing a beta-O-4 bond – this model can simplify the study of depolymerization, the analysis of products of depolymerization and the mechanism itself. Currently, the depolymerization of lignin is one of the most promising processes for the production of aromatic molecules from sustainable sources – thus, the interest in lignin model compounds is high. With the synthesis of lignin model compound, I would also like to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of lignin itself.
