With it’s thought-through order of chosen words, poetry conveys to the reader the author's thoughts, experiences, adventures, memories. It can be written in a predetermined and strict form or a free and impulsive one. Designing the visual part of a poetry collection into a common whole is a similar process too. When designing a poetry collection, a paramount concern is to keep the meaning of the poems clear. By designing, we communicate to the reader the atmosphere of the poetry collection before the reader starts reading it.
The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate the necessary steps in the process of creating an appropriately designed, visually connected whole, in this case a poetry collection. The poetry in the book is abstract and the created images therefore correspond to the content. The aim of the images was not to explain or describe the content of the poems. Rather the visual material and poetry in the book complement each other. The main objective of the task was therefore to strike the right balance in the relationship between the poetry and photography and to create a book, which in its design is both contemporary and timeless at the same time.
We start with the planning process and a theoretical exploration of what a book is generally. We also explore book production and define and describe the distinction between poetry and other literary forms. We also describe the important elements and characteristics which make up every book.
We go on to analyse the content and present the concept of the book. In the process we detail references and analyse similar books of poetry to determine the appropriate artistic language for the book. Before designing the book, we decide the necessary technical characteristics for the book and present the analysis and the selection of the material. At the end we present and comment on the fully designed poetry collection.
