The paper presents the current selection of the diastratic labels that are being used in the new explanatory dictionary of Slovenian (eSSKJ), justifying the choice of labels and according to the SSKJ modifications or additions to their definitions. On the basis of concrete lexicographic language material, the article discusses problems of the informative value and precision of diastratic labels, relating them to and conditioning them by the criteria of use of a given diastratic label. From the perspective of the relation between language and society and current language use, the analysis tries to shed light on how meaningful various diastratic labels in a dictionary are as indicators of social changes and evaluations. Precisely for this reason, their definitions and the scope of their application should be developed in a well-thought-out manner throughout the entire process of compilation of an explanatory dictionary.
