Abstract

Title:Hot air welding of polyurethane foam
Abstract:
For each welding process we must determine the parameters and conditions under which we will weld, and based on that, determine the most optimal parameters. In the task, we welded two different foams, which are visually classified by color, each having a different density. A hot air burner was used for joining, where the temperature was changed in each experiment according to the density of the foam. Both foams were welded with different air flows and two different nozzles. Low energy input resulted with low polymer melting, which was illustrated by weaker weld quality. On the other hand, increasing the energy on the nozzle leaded to excessive remelting. The quality of the joints was checked based upon visual assessments of the weld, tangible estimates of the weld hardness and macro picture of the joint. During the experiments, we used pieces of foam with dimensions 500 x 20 x 30 mm for welding. We found that the density of the foam affects the technical parameters, and that we need lower welding temperatures to increase the air flow. Based on the macro image of the joints, we noticed a lot of deformations caused by high temperatures in the cell structure and consequently a poorer yield of the blank.
