Abstract

Title:Relationship between social support and psychological well-being in students’ athletes
Abstract:
The purpose of this master's thesis was to examine the relationship between social support and psychological well-being in students’ athletes and to determine how these two constructs relate to the development of dual career competencies. We wanted to find out if there is a difference in perceived social support from parents, teachers, and classmates, grades, and developmental level of dual career competencies between students’ athletes attending the high school athletic department and students’ athletes attending the general high school department. We were also interested in whether there were differences in perceived social support between students who participate in individual competitions and students who participate in team sports. The sample consisted of 247 students’ athletes enrolled in high school and attending the high school's general or athletic department. We used the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (CASSS), Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF), and the Dual Career Competency Questionnaire for Athletes (DCCQ-A29) to measure the constructs. Results showed important positive correlations between social support, psychological well-being, and dual career competency development, suggesting that social support in the school context is also important for students’ athletes. Differences between students attending the general education department of high school and students attending the athletic department of high school were not found, nor were differences between students participating in individual competitions and students participating in team sports.
