In the last couple of years there have been various political events on the European and the World political scene and Brexit is one of the most important ones, sure to affect and cause ripples both on the old continent and worldwide. Ever since its beginnings, the European Union played a major part in the stability and in the economical renewal of post-war Europe. The base of it was heartland Europe but with strong connections to the United Kingdom, which joined the European Economic Community in 1973. To say that things always ran smoothly is a huge understatement and the union has constantly been tested. The biggest test was the international refugee crisis, which culminated in 2015. In 2016 a national referendum on the membership in the European Union was held in the United Kingdom and 51,9% of the population voted to leave. This essay tries to summarize the history of the involvement of the United Kingdom in the European Union, the issues and problems of the European Union which resulted in an referendum, the timeline of the Brexit and the consequences of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union (both real and predicted). The final part of the essay is the evaluation of relations between Croatia and the United Kingdom and the anticipated consequences of the Brexit for Croatia and the bilateral relations. As a part of the evaluation the importance and presence of Brexit and its phenomena among the high school students will be researched. The goal is to determine the weight of Brexit on Croatia and the influence of Brexit on minors.
